El Sevilla 3 : Atletico de Madrid 1
I attended my first futbol match in Sevilla and cheered for the home team. The Sevilla Futbol Club fans rival the Cameron Crazies for intensity and endurance. The section behind the home team goal maintains a litany of encouraging and taunting chants throughout out the whole match that includes coordinated hand gestures, drums, and apparently yellow smoke bombs. There was cause for celebration as a star player Diego opened up the game in the first half to a 2:0 lead. It was not until the second period and a 3:0 lead where Madrid managed their singular goal. I had purchased an FC Sevilla polo the day before to wear to the game. However true fans could spot me as an impostor as I lacked the requisite embroidered/knit scarf worn on the wrist or held like a banner to support the team. Though I’m sure they were glad I was supporting their team instead of wearing the Madrilenos’ blue.
A good game for a first match as the team I favored dominated possession, maintained a cushy 2 point lead, and scored three impressive goals.
